How Foodbanks Work

Your donations help Wythenshawe Foodbank provide emergency food and support to local people in crisis.

People can face a food crisis for many reasons, including losing a job, receiving an unexpected bill or struggling to cover essential costs on a low income. Emergency food can ease the immediate pressure and give people space to seek further support.

At Wythenshawe Foodbank, donations, volunteers and local referral agencies work together to help people in our community.

Food donations make our work possible

Schools, churches, businesses and individuals donate in-date, non-perishable food to our foodbank. Supermarket collections and community events, including Harvest Festival collections, also help keep our shelves stocked.

Every food donation helps us prepare emergency parcels for local people and families facing hardship.

Volunteers sort and prepare the food

Our volunteers check donations to make sure food is in date and suitable to distribute. They then sort, store and pack it into food parcels, ready for people who need support.

Local agencies arrange foodbank vouchers

We work with trusted referral agencies, including health visitors, social workers and other support professionals. They speak with people about their circumstances, identify the support they need and issue foodbank vouchers.

These agencies may also offer advice and practical help with the difficulties behind someone’s crisis.

People collect emergency food and support

Once someone has a voucher, they can visit a foodbank centre to collect three days of nutritionally balanced emergency food for their household.

Our volunteers offer a warm welcome, a listening ear and information about other services that may be able to help.
