Trustees Wanted – Join Wythenshawe Foodbank as a Trustee

We are looking for two new trustees to join our board and help shape the future of Wythenshawe Foodbank.

Wythenshawe Foodbank is part of the Trussell network. We are a small, locally focused charity providing emergency food and support to people experiencing financial hardship and crisis.

We operate from five sites, six days a week, serving communities across Wythenshawe from our central operations hub in Wythenshawe town centre.

Demand for our services continues to rise, with increasing numbers of individuals, couples and families needing emergency food parcels. Our work is supported by two members of staff, approximately 30 regular volunteers and volunteers from local organisations who help at events such as food drives.

To help us respond to this growing demand and strengthen the charity for the future, we are looking for two enthusiastic and committed people to join our board of trustees.

About the role

Trustees share collective responsibility for the governance and strategic direction of Wythenshawe Foodbank. Working together, the board ensures that the charity remains true to its values, uses its resources responsibly and continues to meet the needs of the local community.

This is a voluntary role and a valuable opportunity to use your knowledge, skills and life experience to make a genuine difference in Wythenshawe.

Trustees are responsible for:

• Helping to shape and support the charity’s purpose, vision, strategy, goals and objectives
• Ensuring the charity’s resources and assets are managed responsibly and used only to further its charitable purposes
• Acting with reasonable care and skill, contributing the necessary time, thought and energy to the role
• Ensuring the charity complies with its legal, financial, accounting and reporting responsibilities
• Helping to establish and review appropriate policies and procedures, including those covering employment, health and safety, equality, safeguarding, GDPR and data protection
• Monitoring the charity’s performance and financial position
• Supporting positive relationships between trustees, staff, volunteers and the people who use our services
• Promoting the food bank within the community and helping us reach potential supporters, funders and beneficiaries
• Representing Wythenshawe Foodbank at relevant meetings, events and conferences when required
• Keeping the board informed of relevant fundraising opportunities, grant applications and other developments

Board meetings currently take place every two months during the evening. Trustees may also occasionally be asked to attend additional meetings or undertake agreed tasks between meetings.

About you

We are looking for people who care about Wythenshawe and want to help tackle food poverty while ensuring emergency food remains available to local people in crisis.

Our ideal candidates will demonstrate:

• An interest in and commitment to the work of Wythenshawe Foodbank
• A commitment to equality, social justice and tackling food poverty
• A willingness to participate actively in discussions about the needs of the charity, its staff, volunteers and beneficiaries
• Sound, independent judgement and the ability to think creatively
• The ability to work effectively as part of a team
• A willingness to learn, develop and contribute constructively

Skills we are particularly seeking

We welcome applications from people with a wide range of professional and personal experience. At present, we would particularly like to hear from candidates with skills in one or more of the following areas:

Fundraising and grant applications

• Fundraising or grant-bid writing
• Building relationships with businesses and other organisations
• Encouraging donations, sponsorship and community support
• Identifying potential funding opportunities

Social media and communications

• Developing digital and social media strategies
• Creating plans to increase awareness and engagement
• Communicating effectively across different online platforms
• Engaging volunteers, supporters and the wider public
